DOC Regulations and the Quality Pyramid for Consumers and Winegrowers
From the Base to the Peak
Alto Adige wines with the DOC classification provide the consumer with the certainty that the item is an original Alto Adige quality product whose origin vouches for controlled winegrowing, inspected wineries, and the best crafting. For the winegrowers, the seal of approval signifies that they can trust that only controlled wineries can claim the DOC status for themselves and advertise with it.
The use of the DOC designation [from the Italian denominazione di origine controllata, meaning “controlled designation of origin”] is regulated by the Italian Wine Act, Legislative Decree No. 61 of April 8, 2010. This law organizes the wines in a quality pyramid in which table wines form the lowest level, the wines with a typical geographical indication are positioned in the middle, and the DOC and DOCG wines as well as wines from single vineyards are at the peak.
