Alto Adige Vernatsch Cup 2017

On May 15 and 16, the 14th Alto Adige Vernatsch Cup was awarded. The Schiava wines from the 2016 vintage were brilliant

For the fourteenth time, the unique atmosphere of the vigilius mountain resort provided the setting for the authentic and typical Alto Adige Schiava (Vernatsch). At the invitation of Ulrich Ladurner, Othmar Kiem, and Günther Hölzl, an international jury consisting of German and Italian oenologists, sommeliers, and trade journalists chose from among ninety-five wines to select the “Schiava of the Year”.

In contrast to previous years, the wines were no longer tasted and awarded prizes according to designations of origin. Instead, there were only two large categories: Tradition and Departure. The group Tradition comprised the classic Schiavas, while the Departure category covered Schiavas that follow new paths.

The winners of “2017 Schiava of the Year” were:

In the “Tradition” category:
• Südtirol Kalterersee classico superiore Plantaditsch 2016 – Klosterhof
• Südtirol Kalterersee classico superiore Kalkofen 2016 – Baron di Pauli
• Südtirol Meraner Schickenburg 2016 – Kellerei Meran
• Südtiroler Grauvernatsch 2016 – Kellerei Kurtatsch
• Südtiroler Vernatsch Alte Reben 2016 – Franz Gojer, Glögglhof
• Südtirol St. Magdalener classico Schutzsiegel 2016 – Kellerei Bozen
• Südtirol St. Magdalener classico 2016 – Stefan Ramoser, Fliederhof

In the “Departure” category:
• Südtirol Vernatsch Alte Reben Gschleier 2015 – Kellerei Girlan
• Südtirol St. Magdalener Moar 2015 – Kellerei Bozen
• Donà Rouge 2011 – Hartmann Donà

In addition, a separate tasting committee made up of private wine connoisseurs chose their favorites from among the winning wines. After an in-depth tasting, the Südtirol St. Magdalener Moar 2015 from the Kellerei Bozen was chosen as the Public’s Favorite of the 2017 Vernatsch Cup.

This year, the distinction of “Schiava Ambassador” remained in Alto Adige and went to the Kalterersee-Charta from wein.kaltern.
