Alto Adige Vernatsch Cup Celebrates Its Anniversary

Happy faces, satisfied guests, and first-class wines

For the fifteenth year in a row, the awarding of the Alto Adige Vernatsch Cup took place this year on June 4 and 5. “Schiava (Vernatsch) is a traditional wine that today is once again very modern,” emphasized Othmar Kiem, wine trade journalist and one of the organizers of the Vernatsch Cup. “It is pleasing through its lightness and fruit.” The large crowd at the Vernatsch Gala showed that Schiava is once again popular with wine enthusiasts. Awards were presented at the Alto Adige Vernatsch Cup to those wines that scored with especially high quality.

In the cozy ambience of the vigilius mountain resort at the Vigiljoch near Lana, a total of ten wines were given recognition. A jury of experts made up of renowned prominent personalities from the wine sector had a hard time making up their minds from the ninety-five wines that had been submitted. As you can well imagine, this decision was anything but an easy one.

Among the lucky winners in the “Tradition” category this year were:

-Kalterersee Auslese Classico Superiore Per Se 2017 from Elena Walch
-Kalterersee Classico Superiore Leuchtenburg 2017 from Cantina Kaltern
-Südtirol Meraner Graf Schickenburg 2017 from the Meran Burggräfler Winery
-Südtiroler Edelvernatsch Vigna Haselhof 2017 from the Josef Brigl Winery
-Südtiroler Vernatsch Hexenbichler 2017 from Cantina Tramin
-Südtirol St. Magdalener classico 2017 from Fliederhof
-Südtirol St. Magdalener classico 2017 from Kandlerhof, Martin Spornberger
-Südtirol St. Magdalener classico 2017 from Ansitz Waldgries

In addition, the prize for “The Other Vernatsch” was awarded which judges older vintages and those wines that do not fall within the “standard pattern”. In that category, it was Ansitz Waldgries with its St. Magdalener klassisch Antheos 2016 and the St. Pauls Winery with its Südtiroler Vernatsch Passion 2016 that had cause for celebration.

This special evening was crowned by the awarding of the “Public’s Favorite”. A select tasting committee made up of private wine connoisseurs chose its favorite out of the prizewinning wines. The coveted award went to the St. Magdalener klassisch Antheos 2016 from Ansitz Waldgries.

It was an all-around successful evening that paid fitting homage to Alto Adige Vernatsch!
