Wines from designated geographical units in Alto Adige
Wines from geographical units – superior quality and unique character from Alto Adige
The same grape variety, but a different taste? Terroir defines the character of a wine. Soil and climate, elevation above sea level and steepness of the slope, solar radiation, and precipitation are core factors for wine quality. Wines from geographical units serve as true ambassadors of the places in Alto Adige they grow in. The ideal grape varieties to be grown in each geographical unit have been carefully selected to bring out the best character of every single location.
Starting with the 2024 vintage, 86 geographical units qualify to use the designation UGA (Additional Geographical Unit, from Italian: Unità Geografica Aggiuntiva), which provides clear definition and legal protection. DOC wines from Alto Adige that meet all requirements can add the name of the geographical unit to the label. A pictogram clearly indicates the geographical unit and guarantees the origin of the grapes. One of the requirements to be met is a reduction in harvest quantity by up to 25 percent compared to the legal yield quantities for DOC wines. A maximum of five grape varieties ideally suitable for the conditions on site has been defined for each geographical unit.
