First Winery, Now Winery and Estate

Josef Niedermayr has built his traditional winery one step at a time

Created as a commercial winery and today a renowned estate winery: that is the Josef Niedermayr Estate Winery in Cornaiano, which has grown step by step over the past decades. In the meantime, the estate’s own vineyards now encompass an area of 25 hectares, and additional areas are leased over the long term.

Within that context, the Niedermayr operation was originally “just” a commercial winery that was founded in 1852 and was operated as such for decades. Their own vineyards were only planted little by little until 2007, when the winery officially became the Josef Niedermayr Estate Winery in Cornaiano.

From the vine through the grape into the bottle: instead of just taking over the grapes like his forefathers, Josef Niedermayr now has the entire chain under his wing. If his own vineyards and those in long-term lease are counted together, the estate winery has an impressive 35 hectares available upon which a broad assortment of grape varieties is grown. They range from the classic red varieties such as Schiava, Lagrein, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot to the white wines, and thus Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc.

They all come to the market under the Josef Niedermayr label with three lines: Tradition, Gourmet, and Finesse. “Our riserva wines and cuvées of the top Finesse line are still made and matured in the traditional form in large oak barrels,” Niedermayr explains. Tradition as a winery carries its obligations.
