With its gently rolling vineyards and splendid wineries, Lake Kaltern (also known as the Kalterer See or Lago di Caldaro) is the heart of the Alto Adige winegrowing region. The largest winegrowing zones in Alto Adige in Eppan and Kaltern (Appiano and Caldaro) attract countless wine lovers, bringing the region of Oltradige (west of the Adige River) renown that ranges far beyond Alto Adige’s borders.  Merlot and Cabernet in the valley areas and then Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir at the higher elevations join the traditional Schiava [Vernatsch] in positions of honor with Lake Kaltern, but they are also proof of the spirit of the times and the innovative ideas of the winegrowers through their multitude of varieties and their quality management.
