New editions of Italian wine guides are published:
345 Top marks for Alto Adige wines
The wine producing country of Alto Adige is characterised by its variety. This variety is reflected in the just published latest ratings from the 15 most renowned Italian wine guides and competitions. A total of 345 Alto Adige top ratings range across 209 wines from 78 producers. The award-winning wines come from a large variety of grapes. Even among the special awards given by the wine guides, the small wine producing country of Alto Adige is strongly represented.
The Italian wine guides honour wines and producers that have excelled in the past year with special awards. This applies, for example, to the 2021 Sauvignon Riserva Gran Lafóa Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Colterenzio, which is Gambero Rosso's Italian white wine of the year. Another award went to the 2022 S. Maddalena classico Vigna Rondell R Alto Adige DOC from Franz Gojer-Glögglhof in the "Vini rari" category. This year's "Tastevin" award from Vitae was given to the 2021 Pinot Nero Riserva Trattmann Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Girlan, which was also honoured with the "Gemme" award. This award also went to three other Alto Adige wines, the 2020 Chardonnay Riserva Kreuzweg Family Reserve Alto Adige DOC from Castelfeder, the 2020 Lagrein Riserva Vigna Klosteranger Alto Adige DOC from Wine Estate/Monastery Cellar Muri-Gries and the 2011 Pinot Blanc Rarity Alto Adige Terlano DOC from CantinaTerlano.
The guide I Vini di Veronelli also declares that the best white wine comes from Alto Adige, the 2021 Terlano Primo Grande Cuvée Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Terlano. The Stroblhof Winery and its 2019 Pinot Noir Riserva Sepp Hanni Alto Adige DOC received the "10 vini Sole" award. Doctor Wine graded the 2022 Moscato rosa Alto Adige DOC from Franz Haas as sweet wine of the year. The same wine guide honours Hans Terzer, the long-time cellar master of the St. Michael-Eppan Winery, for his life's work, while the Santa Maddalena young winemakers were honoured in the "Next Generation" category. Finally, the "Rainer Zierock Award" from The Wine Hunter went to Andreas Dichristin from Tröpfltalhof.
White wine country with red top runner
Once again this year, it is particularly interesting to take a look at the range of varieties among the award-winning wines. "The high number of top scores for our white wines is a particularly important endorsement of the white wine region of Alto Adige," Andreas Kofler, President of the Consorzio Alto Adige Wines stated. This year, 183 of the 345 top scores went to white wines which make up 53 per cent of the award-winning wines. Red wines achieved 129 top marks, and sweet wines 13. With 20 wines, the number of Alto Adige sparkling wines that have achieved top ratings in the Italian wine guides is pleasingly high.
It is also striking that, although white wines are at the top of the list of highest scores, red wines are ahead among the varieties. Pinot Noir accounts for 28 of the 209 award-winning wines, followed by 22 Schiava wines. "If we add the 16 Lagrein wines, our autochthonous varieties Schiava and Lagrein account for almost one in five award-winning wines," a delighted Andreas Kofler said. Ahead of Lagrein, however, are another three white varieties. They are Sauvignon (20 excellent wines) as well as Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay (16 each).
The most award-winning wines
No fewer than nine Alto Adige wines achieved five or more top scores this year. With six awards, the 2011 Pinot Blanc Rarity Alto Adige Terlano DOC from Cantina Terlano is at the top of the list. Eight other wines are also listed in the guides with five top scores: the 2022 Lagrein Riserva Taber Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Bozen, the 2021 Pinot Noir Riserva Trattmann Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Girlan, the 2020 LR Riserva Alto Adige DOC and the Sauvignon Riserva Gran Lafóa Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Colterenzio, the 2019 Appius Alto Adige DOC from the St. Michael-Eppan Winery, the 2021 Müller-Thurgau Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner Alto Adige DOC from the Winery Tiefenbrunner | Schlosskellerei Turmhof winery and the 2022 Gewürztraminer Nussbaumer Alto Adige DOC and the 2022 Gewürztraminer vendemmia tardiva Terminum Alto Adige DOC from Cantina Tramin.
The producer rankings
In addition to the variety of grapes and wines, a look at the individual producers is also interesting. "The diversity of the Alto Adige wine landscape is also evidenced by the large number of award-winning producers and in the fact that cooperatives, private estate wineries and independent winegrowers all produce top ranking wines," Andreas Kofler commented.
Taking a closer look at the number of top scores, Cantina Terlano takes first place this year with 19, followed by Cantina Girlan, Cantina Colterenzio, St. Michael-Eppan Winery and Cantina Tramin with 16 top marks each. Elena Walch scored 14 top marks, the Winery Tiefenbrunner | Schlosskellerei Turmhof 13. The situation changes slightly when looking at the number of award-winning wines rather than the number of top scores. In this ranking, Cantina Colterenzio is in the lead with eight, followed by Cantina Girlan, the St. Michael-Eppan Winery, Cantina Terlano and the Ansitz Waldgries Manor Christian Plattner with seven each, as well as the Cantina Valle Isarco, Franz Haas, Manincor, Nals Margreid, the Winery Tiefenbrunner | Schlosskellerei Turmhof and Elena Walch with six.
