Vintage 2013
An exciting vintage with great white wines, elegant, typical Schiava wines, and red wines with good potential
For Alto Adige, 2013 is an outstanding year for white wines, as they are turning out fresh, characteristic, and long-lasting. The Schiava (Vernatsch) wines are also presenting themselves as very typical and inviting, while the Pinot Noirs are elegant and fruity. The situation with the other red wines is only slightly less exciting.
The autumn weather with its cool temperatures fostered the development of aromas and acidity above all else with the white wine grapes in an ideal manner: Alto Adige’s winegrowers harvested without exception very healthy, compact grapes with fine must values and unexpectedly good acidity.

Fresh, Fruity White Wines
Alto Adige’s winemakers are pleased about the “surprisingly excellent, outstanding white wine vintage with aromatic, fruity, very fresh and complex wines.” In 2013, it is above all the Sauvignon Blanc with its gentle abundance of aroma, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Grigio with their freshness and fruit, and Gewürztraminer with its ideal ripeness and aromatic quality that are presenting their best sides. The 2013 vintage distinguishes itself through the good sugar levels, somewhat higher acidities, and complex fruit aromas. On the whole, the 2013 white wines are showing themselves to be very balanced with typical fruit, a lovely structure, and pleasant but present acidity. “The 2013 vintage is a truly great one for white wines!”
Typical Schiava and Elegant Reds
Also promising are the year’s Schiava (Vernatsch) wines, with the typical Santa Maddalena being crisp, elegantly juicy, and inviting, as well as the fruity, fresh, and quaffable Lake Caldaro wines.
The Pinot Noirs from less-elevated areas are showing with clean fruit and lovely elegance. The late-ripening reds such as Merlot and Cabernet had a somewhat more difficult time in 2013 if one or the other ended up lacking in hours of sun in October. The wines are presenting themselves as lean, elegant, and with lovely tannins, but they are still young and closed and still need time.
