2013 was an excellent year for white wines in South Tyrol, producing fresh, distinctive, and long-lasting wines. The Vernatsch wines are also very typical and inviting, while the Pinot Noirs are elegant and fruity. The situation is somewhat more mixed for the other red wines.
The autumnal weather with cool temperatures promoted the development of aromas and acidity in an ideal way, especially for white wine grapes: South Tyrol's winegrowers harvested very healthy, compact grapes with beautiful must values and unexpectedly good acidity.
Fresh, fruity white wines
South Tyrol's cellar masters are delighted with the "surprisingly great, excellent white wine vintage with aromatic, fruity, very fresh, and complex wines." Sauvignon, with its delicate aromas, Pinot Blanc and Ruländer, with their freshness and fruitiness, and Gewürztraminer, with its ideal ripeness and aromatics, are particularly impressive in 2013. The 2013 vintage is characterized by good sugar levels, a slightly higher acidity level, and complex fruit aromas. Overall, the 2013 white wines are very well-balanced with typical fruit, beautiful structure, and pleasant but present acidity. "2013 is truly a great vintage for white wines!"
Typical Vernatsch and elegant reds
The Vernatsch wines of the vintage are also promising, with typical St. Magdalener wines that are crisp, juicy, elegant, and inviting, as well as fruity, fresh, and drinkable Kalterersee wines.
The Pinot Noirs from the lower vineyards present themselves with clean fruit and beautiful elegance. The late-ripening reds such as Merlot and Cabernet had a slightly more difficult time in 2013, lacking a few hours of sunshine in October. The wines are delicate, elegant, and have beautiful tannins, but they are still young and closed and need more time.
