Pioneers of Alto Adige Wine

The Consortium of Alto Adige Wine presents eight documentary film portraits of a formative generation of winegrowers

The history of Alto Adige wine was shaped by prominent personalities with a pioneer spirit and their vision to produce wines of a worldwide reputation in this unique landscape.

There were a few distinctive figures who stood out as essentially formative to providing Alto Adige wine with its international name and outstanding quality. In the 1980s, they founded a new era in this winegrowing region as winegrowers, winemakers, and business managers of wineries.

As a project that was commissioned by the Consortium of Alto Adige Wine, eight brief documentary portraits have been created in the past two years that acknowledge on the screen the prime personalities of this period of emergence and record them as a chronicle for the future.

As a beginning to this series, the pioneers of this period were represented by Luis Raifer, Paolo Foradori, Hartmuth Spitaler, and Alois Lageder. Every single one of them was a visionary and a mentor, and each of them was in his own way formative for the success of Alto Adige wine.

The next echelon consists of portraits of Graziano Filippi, Toni Rottensteiner, Josef Reiterer, and Josephus Mayr. Another series of distinctive figures who impressively represent the great variety of Alto Adige wine culture.

They were portrayed by documentary director Peter Künzel of Munich, along with Val Venosta cameraman Michael Tscholl in conjunction with the Merano film production team of F-Tech Production under the leadership of Axel Bernhart.

With idyllic views of the landscape and careful documentary observations, the series “Pioneers of Alto Adige Wine” tells of the substantial milestones, of how the vision of Alto Adige wine was really developed in the 1970s and 1980s, and how a major push for quality was set into motion.
