The southernmost wine of the Eisack Valley
Wine from Völs am Schlern? It exists — and it’s first-class.
Wine is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Fiè allo Sciliar. Yet, thanks to its favorable location, the Bessererhof estate in Fiè has been growing grapes for over six decades and has been producing wine on site for more than twenty years. The Mair family benefits not only from abundant sunshine but also from an impressive altitude difference among the vineyards of Bessererhof.
It is known as the southernmost winery in the Valle Isarco, where cool air flows from the north into the vineyards of Bessererhof. The necessary warmth is provided by the Bolzano basin, whose foothills extend right to the estate. This creates ideal temperature variations as well as a sunny, low-precipitation climate.
The estate itself is situated at 350 meters above sea level, but the vineyards around the farm are very different from those that the Mair family planted at Fiè at 800 meters and in Tiers at the entrance to Val di Funes at 900 meters altitude. Here mainly white grape varieties grow, including Pinot Blanc, Kerner, and Chardonnay, which junior winemaker Hannes Mair crafts into fresh, fruity wines with exceptional intensity.
While son Hannes is responsible for the cellar, father Othmar takes care of the vineyard work, and mother Rosmarie handles the sales of the 50,000 to 60,000 bottles produced annually at Bessererhof in Fiè. A true family business that knows how to make the most of the natural gifts given to the Mair family.
