Quality from the Castle

Nature-friendly management, prudent selection of varieties, gentle processing

Enchantingly situated in a secluded hillside setting in the sunny south of Alto Adige, the Gothic castle rises above the surrounding landscape.

Owned by the Counts Khuen-Belasi family for 400 years, the estate reflects its long tradition and deep connection to this place in countless details throughout the castle and farmstead.

Scenic beauty, historic architecture and outstanding soils come together here to form an exceptional whole, set within an almost Mediterranean-looking landscape.

The old estate is surrounded by vineyard-covered hills in excellent wine-growing locations, while at its heart St. Sebastian, patron saint of the family chapel, stands watch over the property.

Over the centuries, the house and estate have retained a very special charm: a small island away from the main routes, with fragrant gardens and mature trees, a courtyard with chickens and geese, as well as horses, a donkey and a sheep. It is an ideal combination and a perfect complement to the organically cultivated vineyards.

“Our goal is to produce excellent wines, and that requires vines that grow harmoniously in a healthy environment,” Khuen-Belasi explains, describing the philosophy he follows at Schloss Englar Winery in St. Michael-Eppan. This philosophy is reflected in a careful choice of grape varieties adapted to the soils and climate, organic cultivation methods, gentle working practices and precise yield management. “We deliberately reduce the yield per hectare, adapting it to the individual vines, in order to harvest grapes of the highest quality,” says the castle winemaker.

Schloss Englar Winery comprises a total of 10 hectares of vineyards planted with Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Schiava. A traditional range for a winery firmly rooted in tradition.
