The vintage begins in the vineyard
Small quantities. Lots of manual labour. Wine with a sense of place.
The Andergassen family has been involved in winegrowing for generations. Their history dates back to 1615, and the Steflhof in Kaltern has been the family’s home since 1924. Today, Georg Andergassen and his son Manuel run the business together – respecting tradition whilst remaining open to new approaches.
“The character and individuality of the wine are forged right there in the vineyard,” explains Georg Andergassen. That is why every vintage begins there for the Andergassens: with meticulous leaf management, deliberately reduced yields and selective harvesting at just the right time. Much of this is done by hand and requires experience, attention to detail and a delicate touch.
Around Lake Kaltern, a variety of vineyard sites, soils and exposures come together. Each plot has its own unique conditions. The grapes are therefore vinified separately and bottled at the Steflhof – ensuring that the character of each specific site is preserved in the wine. Vernatsch and Lagrein, as local varieties, are just as representative of the region’s heritage as Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Merlot. The result is a small production of wines with their own distinctive character, shaped by their vineyard site and the family’s hard work.
Anyone wishing to discover the Steflhof and its wines is warmly welcome to join a cellar tour. The tour of the historic wine cellar concludes with a tasting.
