Two farmhouses, one winery, five hectares of vineyards, one inn, one
farm shop, and everything at Lake Caldaro. Along with her family, Reinhilde Florian has built up a mini-empire that is based upon one central pillar. Wine, of course.
The
Florian family places its main attention on the sale of wine at
“Reinhild’s Farm Shop” which lies idyllically on the lake and offers the
tasting of outstanding wines. Including those from their own vineyards,
which since the early 1960s have ensured the family’s economic
survival. At that time, tourism began to boom in Alto Adige, the
economic miracle brought guests into the province who also found a place
to stay with the Florian family. Along with her mother Ida, Reinhild
(the final "e" in her name is dropped in everyday use) ran the inn.
In
spite of that, the winegrowing was not neglected. On the contrary: the
area of cultivation was planted step by step up to the five hectares of
today, added to which the adjacent Spiegelhof was purchased in which the winery is also located.
In addition, an investment was made in expanding the number of varieties.
Earlier on, it was almost exclusively Schiava that was planted for Lago
di Caldaro, but today, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Goldmuskateller,
Lagrein, Merlot, and Cabernet dominate. And instead of the pergola
trellis, today the vines grow on the espalier system. “As a result of
this, the quality of the grapes is increased and the work is made easier
because we can also increasingly do work in our vineyards by machine,”
says Reinhild Florian. Two birds with one stone.
