Experiencing Wine in Bolzano-Gries
Pleasure, history, and hospitality at the Schmid Oberrautner Wine Estate
Anyone wishing to discover Bolzano from its most enjoyable side will find the perfect setting at the Schmid Oberrautner Wine Estate. In the historic district of Gries, the Schmid family has combined winegrowing, lived tradition, and warm hospitality for generations—creating a place where wine is not only tasted, but truly experienced.
Twenty-one generations have worked the same estate in Bolzano-Gries, making the Schmid family one of the oldest winegrowing families in Alto Adige. The special location brings together a quiet, almost rural atmosphere with the immediate proximity to Bolzano’s old town—an interplay that also defines the character of the wines.
A central experience at the estate is the personal wine tour with tasting. Together with the winegrower, guests gain authentic insights into the world of wine—whether in the historic, protected cellar or in the garden of the estate. It is not just about tasting, but about understanding origin, vinification, and the distinctive features of the Gries winegrowing area.
The focus is on characteristic grape varieties such as Lagrein and Schiava, complemented by Souvignier Gris, a fungus-resistant variety that represents a sustainable approach to viticulture. Careful craftsmanship, experience, and a deep feel for the land shape wines with a clear identity.
Those who wish to extend their stay can combine the wine experience with a holiday at the estate. Three stylishly furnished apartments offer the chance to experience life on a working wine farm—quietly located, yet only a few minutes from the city center.
A stay at the Schmid Oberrautner Wine Estate thus becomes more than just a holiday: it is a personal encounter with wine, history, and people—right where all of these have been closely connected for centuries.
